Caring for our horses provides the necessary understanding for self-care. Basic stable routine equates with the skills required to look after yourself. For example regular mucking out of the stable promotes an understanding of the need to keep your own home in order.
Healthy eating is important to both horse and rider, as is regular exercise for general well-being.
Routine visits from the farrier, the vet and the dentist are as important to the horse as our dental and medical appointments.
Life in the Lodge - the student's accommodation - provides opportunities to recognise and establish all these skills as the need occurs, with appropriate support from staff.
Away from the horse, other important issues are addressed - managing money through the use of local shops, bank and post office. Understanding bus and train timetables, getting about town and generally realising the value of money and the need to budget.
