Students are encouraged to view their future with heightened expectations and the dream of independent living has become reality for many former Bridg'it Venture students.
However coping with making decisions is not always easy for some people, what to wear, meal menus or a more important career decision.
Initially, informed decisions can be reached with help but in time most students learn to take responsibility for the choices they make.
Preparation for successful independence is a very long-term goal and begins early in the students' time at the Bridg'it Venture. Small steps where and when appropriate can include: deciding on the correct clothing for a changeable day, organising a packed lunch on a work experience day or catching a bus with a 'minder' shadowing.
Where appropriate 3rd Year students can be sent further afield on work experience. Placements are carefully chosen and are not necessarily horse related, as it is important for students to realise for themselves that their skills are transferable.
Learning to plan and use one's initiative is a common thread throughout all aspects of the course and comes with increasing self-confidence in the ability to deal with situations. Coping with the unexpected in the yard or finding the right bus stop to return home from a shopping trip - whatever the need, tailor-made programmes equip our students with these skills, offering support and practice in real-life situations.
